Why do Baby Boomers suck? Let me count the ways! First you have the feeling of entitlement where everyone thinks they deserves to eat their cake and then a slice of the other guy’s too. Second is politics—everything is red or blue, Republican or Democrat, Left of Right and it doesn’t matter what’s right anymore. As a RVR reader says, they’re “hippy-crits”. I think that just about sums it up! Third is the corporate system in which millions of us have been shuffled in to and used and abused while our Baby Boomer middle managers make all the money for doing nothing. The list goes on and on.
Here’s an excerpt from the book Why Baby Boomers Suck I put together, which includes cartoons, fast facts about the ugly generation, and little essays about why they suck. Enjoy!
There comes a time for every generation when they have gained enough knowledge of the world around them and of history in general that they realize that the things their parents did and stand for as a generation pretty much suck ass.
The new generation begins to feel capable of separating themselves from the previous generations and so it ‘moves out’ of their parents’ house to embark on their own adventure. It happened for the Baby Boomers in the 60s and 70s and for their parents in the 30s and 40s. It seems to be a natural step in growing up and every generation seems to go through it eventually. For those of us in the generations titled ‘X’ and ‘Y’, that time is now.
For better or worse, this departure usually comes with a general denunciation of everything that the previous generation did and stood for. That comes naturally for our generation because pretty much everything that the Baby Boomers did and stood for as a generation was worthless tripe.
Some may call this proclamation of separation a rebellion, but we like to keep the hysterical talk to a minimum (unlike our predecessors). This book is just a simple account of how The Baby Boomers have created a mess and how we younger generations are reacting to it. This generational divide looks a little different than those of the past, partly because of the immense amount of wealth and opportunity we have now as a culture (despite the efforts of the Baby Boomers), but also because of the character of the Baby Boomers. Our parents looked at revolution as a way of life- they’re not content unless they have something to revolt or protest against. That concept is ridiculous to us. Another striking dissimilarity between our form of rebellion and our parents’ is timing.
It has taken quite a bit longer for us to “rebel” than it took our parent’s generation to rebel. While we end-of-the-alphabet generations have finally become aware of our historical place by our mid-twenties and early thirties, the Baby Boomers knew everything about the world in the 1960s, when they were still teenagers. Sure, we disobeyed our parents when we were teenagers and we didn’t want to talk to them—every kid goes through that stage—but until now, we haven’t openly denounced them as a generation like they did in the 60s and 70s to their parents.
They rebelled by railing on the World War II Generation (or the Greatest Generation as many have labeled them), moving to San Francisco, fighting the power, and trying every drug known to man (and even some known only to frogs). We are rebelling from our parents by wearing jeans and a T-shirt to work, going to church, being politically incorrect, and writing and publishing books.
We, as a generation are finally coming to the realization that the world our parents created is seriously messed up. It’s a world where people are all doing the wrong things for all the right reasons and the right things for all the wrong reasons. It’s a world where there are two dominant political parties that both end up doing the exact same thing for the country: put it in deeper debt. It’s a world where we spend billions of dollars a year on Starbucks and Microsoft and then protest those multi-billion-dollar corporations’ dominance. It’s a world where to see a breast on national television is obscene, but the sexually violent dance leading up to the breast exposure is okay. It’s a pretty strange place the Baby Boomers have created and we feel it’s time to relieve them of their duties.
We are eager to start taking control–so eager, we’re not waiting in line like our parents did. My mom always says I “want everything NOW!” As if that’s a bad thing. Yes, I want everything now–and if I can’t get it now, I’m going to make it myself. Gone are the years of worshiping the physician. Gone are the years of walking on eggshells when someone around you may be offended. Gone are the years that created screaming secularism and silent spirituality. Gone are the years massive government without progress. Well, maybe not yet.
And so, we present this book in reflection of the world the Baby Boomers have given us. It is an ode to the generation about to retire and suck us dry (with all due respect).

An acquaintance of mine (age 57) forwarded an email to me about how governments shouldn’t be spending money on social aid (welfare, old age security etc) but should be giving the money to the over 50 crowd (babyboomers) who are still working, so they can retire early and waste the money better. As a Gen Xer, who has kind of gotten stuck in the situation of the Mellinials, I am baffled at how much more articulate, educated, and well versed they are than I, or especially the boomers I talk to are. I have a degree in Mathematics, and after struggling in this market that Boomers would have likely made the equivalent of about six figures in with such a degree, I have had the unique experience of bouncing between higher paying, and lower paying jobs. I just got done at a temporary assignment in which the Mellinials were for the most part very rational, and easy to get along with. The rudest person there was a baby boomer, and he kept trying to interject into everyone’s conversations, even when they didn’t concern him because he had offended and ostracized himself from the rest of the group.
One thing in particular that just gets my blood boiling is these donkeys had the audacity to brainwash entire generations into going to college, like all society needed was college grads. No news, obviously, but the whole mentality was “it worked for my generation; it will work for yours; shut up, listen, and go to school kid”. Nobody was taught to be a entrepreneur, we were all supposed to be mindless drones, that regurgitated the perfunctory cliches that Boomers rattled off over and over. There was no challenging of these colleges to make things better, no challenging of our political system to become less bipartisan, and much of what is stated in this article remains true. You can see it on this board, the Mellinials often state historical facts, yet the boomers (who are the whiners themselves) just throw out cliche Jr High comments like the fist post on here: “my regret as a boomer is we raised a generation of whiners”…..which is whining in itself! Seems Boomers have mastered the art of subjectivity, while Mellineals and most Gen Xers try to lean more in objectivity. I am sorry for younger generations, and disgusted with the one that is about 10-30 years older than mine. I worked as a construction labourer for five years and when i finally went to college to get certified as a pipe fitter Every single job in my home town was taken or they wanted someone with “Experience” (Apparently five years watching and helping other fitters do it wasn’t enough) Nope i needed to shovel out more money to go to college and get my 2nd and 3rd year. which also means i have to work while going to college to pay it off. I tried to join a union and they told me “We won’t be accepting applications for a year and a half” that’s applications…not jobs, that’s just to get on the list.
It wasn’t until i said fuck it and started a business with my friend that we began to make a decent income before that it was shit job after shit job. I even got spat on by boomers getting called lazy, irresponsible, being told to “get a real job!” in my line of work outside of construction. if i wasn’t busting my ass apparently i was deserving of humiliation for having a low paying job such as being a guard in the off season.
The entire attitude of that generation is toxic the only ones i have met that i can tolerate are the tradesmen who are still working, and i don’t mean the ones in middle management, i mean the actual workers.

The fact that it took post Boomer generations longer to find out that their parents’ generation sucks goes to show that Boomers really did screw up when it came to teaching you youngsters critical thinking. Do try to catch up.
“Times are bad. Children no longer obey their parents, and everyone is writing a book.” This was written by Cicero, a Roman politician from over 2000 years ago. Nothing changes. I was born in the 1950’s, so I know a little bit about that era. The previous generation worried about us, the previous generation worried about them, and so on. Each generation worries about the succeeding generation. It’s always been this way. The world didn’t get into the condition that it’s in solely due to “boomers” or any other single generation.previous or subsequent. It got this way because of one unchanging thing: human nature. Human nature is essentially the same as it was 5,000 years ago, roughly the length of recorded history. People tend to favor money, power, and instant gratification over wisdom, benevolence and foresight. The first example to come to mind is pollution (I won’t get into global warming. That may or may not be a myth, but very few people would argue that pollution doesn’t exist). That’s why companies continue to pollute the air and waters as much as government regulation will let them: it’s cheaper to dump the pollutants into the air and waters as is, than to treat them first. “Patch up the wagon so that it lasts for my lifetime” with little or no concern for future generations. Pollution isn’t a new thing; it started with industrialization — well over 150 years ago. Ironically, it was the “boomer generation” that began the movement to control pollution in the 1960’s. This is because that happened to be the time that it started to really get out of hand; lakes and rivers were dying off, and the smog was so thick that in some cities, it was hard to see farther than a few hundred feet. If something hadn’t been done about pollution, life as we know it may have ceased to exist. The previous generation or a subsequent generation could have been the ones to do it, had it gotten to a critical state at that point in time. The prior generation started the trend to allow the government to spend more than it took in, and each generation since has continued this trend, causing a mushrooming (geometric) effect. The boomers did nothing to reverse this, nor did the next two generations. I could write 50,000 or more words about other examples without needing to search for ideas. The point is that no one generation is at fault. This is an ongoing effort since at least 3,000 B.C. Human nature doesn’t change. It probably never will, as long as humans continue to occupy the planet.
On to entitlements. Not all are handouts; some are earned. Many boomers will begin collecting Social Security in a few years, which thankfully will be a minor part of my retirement income. They are ENTITLED to it. They paid into it for over 40 years and continue to do so. Social Security isn’t a handout; Nobody can collect Social Security unless they have paid a minimum amount into it over a required number of quarter-years (admittedly the requirements were a lot more lax years ago than they are today). The more paid into it and the later one begins receiving benefits, the larger the monthly benefit is; and the reverse is also true: pay less and collect earlier and get less per month. Those who collect Social Security have earned it. Don’t confuse Social Security with Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Medicaid, or Food Stamps/EBT, which are welfare-based programs. Technically the latter three are considered “entitlements,” but it isn’t the same. People don’t have to pay into welfare-based programs to receive them. I won’t debate the rights or wrongs about that in this post, because it’s going to be long enough as it is.
On to college education. Back in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s, a college education was considered necessary to get a better-paying career. It was true then because the world believed it to be true then. Business wanted college graduates, so we went to college. Millions young adults, including me, went to college, even though about half of us didn’t belong there and wouldn’t be helped by whatever we may have learned. Times have changed, and Business has modified its views. The world has become much more specialized than it used to be. This is a good and a bad thing, but it’s beyond the scope of this reply. For the past 15 years, I have recommended NOT attending college directly out of high school, unless the degree is needed for a specific career (i.e. CPA, teacher, attorney, physician) or the person attending has far above-average intelligence. Instead, I recommend attending a vocation-based school and getting a specialized degree/certificate in an in-demand field. Instead of getting a generic education, the student gets specialized training that can be immediately put to use. If that person is a hard worker and diligent in duties, he/she will rise in the world of business, and the company/corporation will pay or help pay for higher-level courses specific to his/her job to further expand that person’s value to the company (and to himself/herself). It’s a win-win situation. There are pitfalls to this approach, but it’s a better alternative to running up $100,000 in debt and possibly having no marketable skills.
